Waterproof jackets don’t need to break the bank. Gear editor Chris Townsend assess the best budget waterproofs. On test Mountain Warehouse Glacier Extreme
The Mountain Warehouse Glacier Extreme is the heaviest garment tested and also by far the longest, which will please people who don’t like the short style of most waterproof jackets. The hefty weight and bulky packed size means this is a jacket for wearing not carrying in the rucksack. The fabric is relatively stiff, though still comfortable, and the waterproof jacket is more suited to winter blizzards than summer showers. The hood has a wired peak and gives good protection. However the drawcords are hard to use as they bunch up in their channels when tightened. I’d hate to be struggling with them in a storm.
As well as the length I do like the four pockets. The lower ones are cut off by a pack hipbelt but the other three are on the chest. The one under the flap will take a map and an inner one is designed for a mobile phone or GPS unit. I also like the wide soft microfleece lining in the collar, which is very comfortable, and the well-protected front zip.
There are no ventilation options other than the front zip – the cuffs don’t open wide – and this jacket can get quite sweaty if you work hard. If the hood drawcords were sorted out it would be okay for cold weather though.
