While overkill for summer use, Alex Roddie is impressed with the Páramo Enduro Tour trousers for winter conditions.

The tough, waterproof Páramo Enduro Tour trousers are designed for cold conditions and winter mountaineering, and have a design close to that of salopettes. With detachable snow gaiters and loops for braces, as well as ventilation zips, these are highly versatile in the winter mountains but overkill for general use.

Alex Roddie recommends

Overall, these trousers are highly protective in the winter mountains and do the job well. They should last well, making them a long-term investment.

Páramo’s Analogy fabric is warm, durable, and waterproof, with easy garment care – breathability and water repellency can be restored with products such as Nikwax.

The thickness of the material here is well tuned for cold winter use but much too warm for summer, although you do get 3/4-length zipped vents on each leg, which can be used to quickly dump heat. In really nasty winter conditions I’ve found that I still need to wear thin long johns underneath, but they’re fine 90% of the time. It’s great not needing to carry overtrousers!

The fit comes with a caveat of try before you buy, if possible. These trousers have a surprisingly snug fit around the legs, which meant I had to go up a size, which in turn means my pair are baggy at the waist. Even sizing up, they’re snugger around my calves than I would like, but the internal belt slips and won’t reliably keep the trousers up. I have to add braces.

The crampon-resistant ankle patches are great, but I have mixed thoughts about the removable elasticated internal gaiters. These fit well over my winter boots, but with no lacing hooks they occasionally ride up in deep snow, defeating the purpose. The pocket selection is also very limited, with no rear or thigh pockets.

Overall, these trousers are highly protective in the winter mountains and do the job well, but fit and details take the shine off somewhat. They’re also very expensive. However, they should last well, making them a long-term investment.

Testing conditions

Alex tested these trousers during winter mountaineering in Scotland and the Austrian Alps, shoulder-season Scottish scrambling, hillwalking and backpacking, and hot-weather lowland hikes in summer. He has a 34” waist and short legs.
