The hillwalking community can be a sociable bunch. With plenty of outdoor events organised throughout the year in the UK, there’s bound to be a walking festival, talk, film screening, skills course or activity to suit your calendar. From sunrise birdwatching to stargazing evenings, the outdoor events happening across the UK’s rural areas and national parks this year will inspire you to get out there. We’ve also included some cultural odes to the mountains, curated and presented inside institutions, for those days when conditions keep us indoors.

RNLI Kinghorn Lifeboat Station
Herald in the New Year by braving the Firth of Forth! This fundraising Dook has become a great community event and a popular alternative to the famous South Queensferry Dook which has been cancelled for the past few years. The Kinghorn Dook takes place at 11am, with registration opening at 10.15am. All participants in the Dook are requested to register before the event. The event is open to all but under-18s must be accompanied by an adult. The local RNLI recommend that a wetsuit is worn under any fancy dress costume and most importantly, shoes should be worn as the run down to sea will be over open beach. The tide is half out on the day of the Dook so there will be plenty space on the beach for spectators to cheer the participants along.

Whinlatter
Held in England’s only mountain forest, Dodd Wood and Grizedale Forest, this series of monthly canicross events taking place in the autumn and winter offers a mix of courses across three venues with 5 and 3 mile options available. The popular double header weekend in May also makes a return later in the year! They make the perfect location for you to enjoy stunning scenery and a fully marked course on forest roads and trails.

Brecon Beacons
This gruelling non-navigational 24km SAS Selection test march is staged over Pen y Fan, is the world’s oldest Special Forces test with a provable and undeniable heritage. Founded, organised and managed by veteran SAS and SBS soldiers, the ethos is of integrity and the unrelenting pursuit of excellence.

Winter Skills 101 with Girls on Hills
Girls on Hills courses provide a safe and supportive environment for women to learn mountain skills, as well as meet other enthusiasts in an outdoor sport which is still heavily male-dominated. Credit: Girls on Hills

Fort William, Glencoe
Delivered by MCI and WML qualified female guides, these two-day courses are for women seeking adventure in winter. The mountains of Scotland are breathtaking in snow, but can be dangerous. The course covers movement-skills, crampons, self-arresting using an ice-axe, avalanche awareness, and winter navigation.

Wild Atlantic Way, Donegal
The Northwest of Ireland has long been celebrated for its unique Atlantic culture and history. Now there is a festival on the Wild Atlantic Way, making the most of the cosy winter atmosphere, with the best of outdoor activities, live music, cultural talks, and plenty of craic and ceoil with new friends.

Nationwide Whether you’re a Big Garden Birdwatch newcomer or a regular, you’re welcome! On the day itself, taking part couldn’t be simpler: just spend an hour watching the birds in your garden, from your balcony or in your local park, then report what you’ve seen. It all counts, and the RSPB would love to know your sightings. You may even get some surprises. And even if you spot very few birds or none at all, that’s also really useful info, so please report that too.

Banff Mountain Film Festival – UK Tour
28 January
Nottingham
The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour is back in the UK and Ireland for 2026, celebrating 50 years of this prestigious Canadian mountain festival. With two different collections of short films to choose from, 2026’s line-up includes The Finisher, about ultrarunner Jasmin Paris’ groundbreaking achievement and Reel Rock: Riders on the Storm, about a long-coveted alpine first ascent on Torres del Paine, Patagonia. Promising an evening of big-screen adventure and inspiration, the tour starts in Nottingham on 28 January and continues around the UK and Ireland until November. Ticket prices vary per venue, but are all between £15 and £20.

Organised by the 15th Airedale Scout Group, the Rombalds Stride Winter Challenge is a 23-mile walking or running route taking in some of Yorkshire’s finest scenery. You’ll ascend up the Airedale Valley, over Rombalds Moor to Ilkley and across Otley Chevin. Checkpoints will close on a 2mph walking speed.

Wales Dark Skies Week
13 – 22 February
Various locations
All eight protected landscapes in Wales have come together to celebrate what makes our dark skies so unique and special. Together, the three National Parks and the five Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty will be holding events from stargazing and astrophotography workshops with mobile observatories to special guest lectures on biodiversity and heritage. The varied programme ranges from Stand Up Paddle Boarding in the dark to storytelling in the woods to viewing stardust under microscopes!

South Downs National Park
The South Downs Dark Skies Festival is back featuring a host of events from guided walks to stargazes. The park invites you to become aware of the small, positive moments in our lives that don’t have to be big or dramatic but encourage feelings of happiness, contentment, peace, joy, wonder and awe all the same. The programme will celebrate the sparkling lights of the stars, planets, meteors and moon in the night sky. You can also expect encounters with nocturnal wildlife, the bioluminescence of glow worms and biofluorescence of other life.

Fort William
Attracting around 1500 attendees annually, Fort William Mountain Festival celebrates mountain culture and aims to inspire, educate and connect people through outdoor experiences. Each year, audiences enjoy an exciting mix of world-class films, inspiring talks and thought-provoking presentations, plus guided outdoor events and adventure workshops. The exhibition zone offers hands-on access to outdoor gear, information and the chance to speak with local and national experts. Workshops in culture, creativity and outdoor skills add depth to the programme, making the festival a unique five-day celebration of mountain life. The festival is also home to a range of competitions and awards that celebrate the spirit of adventure and excellence in the outdoors, including film and photography awards.

Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors Dark Skies Festival

Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors
The Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks, which remain some of the darkest places in England, are once again running a joint Dark Skies Festival in February. It invites you to see the Dales and Moors in a different light with activities like kayaking, stargazing safaris and zip wires.

Eryri/Snowdonia
The annual Winter Trail Gaeaf will lead you along the stunning tracks of the world-renowned Coed y Brenin Forest Park in Eryri. You could be running in snow, frost, under crystal clear blue skies or in rain and mud. Expect great organisation, a warm welcome, and good fun.

21 February
Dartmoor
Start your new year with a big dose of winter and a walk or run across Dartmoor. This fully supported 50 km journey from South to North, through some of the most remote parts of the moors, is more challenge than race. While good fitness is required, walkers can choose to be accompanied by local Mountain Leaders with first-aid cover.

Peak District
This 24-mile fully-supported challenge event is hosted by the South Pennine chapter of the LDWA and traverses a variety of terrain from wild moorland to well-graded bridleways and footpaths in the Dark Peak and South Pennines, with 3,900ft of ascent. All are welcome and soup and refreshments will be provided.

A celebration of the mountains in winter, this festival includes workshops on ski touring and maintenance, winter skills and avalanche awareness, low-level walking, navigation, and fell running. The evening programme features illustrated talks from esteemed mountaineers as well as a ceilidh, film night, music, and food.

University of Stirling
Mountain Aid is pleased to announce Skills for the Hills 2026, a free one-day event taking place on Saturday 7 March 2026 at the Pathfoot Building, University of Stirling. The day brings together hillwalkers, climbers, outdoor organisations, and not-for-profits for a full programme of inspiring talks, practical sessions, and outdoor activities. “Skills for the Hills is about equipping people with knowledge while celebrating the fantastic community that supports outdoor recreation in Scotland,” said a spokesperson for Mountain Aid. “With expert talks, practical workshops, search and rescue dog demonstrations, and exhibitor stands, the event brings together an engaging and enjoyable programme for all who love the outdoors.” Skills for the Hills 2026 is a day for everyone whether you’re an experienced mountaineer or taking your first steps into Scotland’s hills.

ShAFF, the friendly adventure film festival, is back. Everyone is welcome from outdoors enthusiasts to armchair adventurers who love a good story. As well as watching films, share a ShAFF beer with adventure athletes and filmmakers in the bar, take inspiration from free talks or enjoy a range of outdoor activities. Passionate about your sport? Then try the specialist film selections. Want a high energy hit? Book onto the Adrenaline showing. Fancy inspiration and escapism? Go for the Sprit of Adventure films. Or opt for the Adventure Bites session, a highly discounted hour long loop of films which you can dip into at any time of the weekend to get a taster of what it’s all about.

Powys
The Crickhowell Walking Festival features 83 guided walks at all levels of length and challenge, plus the TM5 Challenge on Table Mountain, which is now an established favourite. There are 16 new walks, nine linear walks, variations on familiar themes and some old favourites too, plus a fine programme of evening events so there’s something to suit you, whatever your preference. A highlight is also the popular Photo Competition and a new contest, the Sole Survivor Distance Challenge, for the person walking furthest on Festival walks over the nine days. There are prizes of high-quality boots for each winner.

Hundreds of runners and walkers will head to the Shropshire Hills for the 80k Festival which showcases the food, history and landscape of this area. It also fundraises for Grow Cook Learn, a charity delivering an education programme that teaches children from inner-city areas about how their food is grown.

Wander Wild Festival

Killarney National Park
Wander off the beaten track, swim at sunrise in a lake, and climb Carrauntoohil to see Ireland from its peak at the Wander Wild Festival. Alongside foodie and wellness goodness, this festival celebrates the outdoors and offers the chance to bike, run, ride, stroll and kayak through the weekend in Killarney National Park.

Corrour, Highlands
This members-only group weekend will take you to Corrour, a remote area on the fringes of Rannoch Moor to the east of Fort William. The area includes some remote Munros and Corbetts; Beinn na Lap, Leum Ulleim, Carn Dearg and Sgor Choinnich surround the Loch and your accommodation – exclusive use of Loch Ossian Youth Hostel – will put these hills within easy reach. There are also opportunities for low level walking for those not wanting strenuous walks or in the case of poor weather. Full details available to members.

Chepstow Walking Festival returns to offer six days of hillwalking, with many routes taking in the natural beauty of the Wye Valley. As an official ‘Walkers are Welcome’ town, Chepstow is a great base to explore the surrounding hills and the programme promises to be packed with walks suitable for all abilities.

Scilly Isles
This event is entirely dedicated to the discovery of the natural beauty and heritage on Scilly by foot – and by sea! The opportunity comes but once a year when you can experience the ‘waking-up’ of the islands when spring is in all its glory on both the inhabited and uninhabited islands.

Haltwhistle Walking Festival

Last year, the festival hosted 40 walks attended by hundreds of walkers and this year will be bigger and better! With plenty of walks in the White Peak area of the Peak District – including sites of interest such as Thor’s Cave and The Roaches – there are more scenic vistas than you can shake your trekking poles at!

Yorkshire Dales
ride2stride is a festival of walks, talks and music and it will return this year with new walks from Skipton and a chance to do the Six Peaks Trail for those who like a challenge. There will be walks to suit all levels, all starting and finishing at a train station along the Settle to Carlisle line. 2026 marks the 150th anniversary of the first passenger service on the line; let’s come together to celebrate this amazing milestone!

Glasgow
Kiltwalk is Scotland’s largest mass participation walking event with over 120,000 people taking part since 2016. Join one of three distance Kiltwalks, all finishing in the idyllic surroundings of Balloch, Loch Lomond, to raise money for your chosen charity alongside the friendly and welcoming community of Kiltwalkers. (Kilt optional…kind of!)

This festival promises a warm welcome and 60 free walks from 3 to 20 miles over nine days. You’ll pick from dog-friendly walks to morning missions or longer challenges hosted by friendly and experienced walk leaders who love the area, home of The Wreckin. There are even medals for completing 25, 50 or 100 miles during the festival.

Spring on Colonsay is a magical time, we often have our best weather in May and the days are wonderfully long which have inspired the new festival theme: the great outdoors! Nestled between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks, the village of Shap lies in the picturesque Lowther Valley. Perhaps most famous for its award-winning chip shop, it is now keen to also become known for its landscape and wildlife, by launching the first ever Shap Outdoor Festival on Saturday 22 April. The festival is a celebration of the stunning scenery and nature that can be explored in the Lowther Valley, with a number of individuals and organisations coming together to provide a packed programme of events for locals and visitors alike.

Yorkshire
The Bingley Celebration of Walking 2026 takes place on Monday 4th May 2026 (May Bank Holiday), organised by Bingley Walkers are Welcome. It’s a free event featuring five guided walks of varying difficulty, all starting from Market Square in Bingley, West Yorkshire. The five walks on offer range from a graded ‘hard’ 11-mile walk of the Harden Valley taking in woodlands, waterfalls, Hewenden Viaduct and moorland all the way through to the Bingley Heritage Trail, a family-friendly 3-mile circular walk exploring Bingley’s history.

National Forest Walking Festival

South Derbyshire
Explore the Forest through the lens of art and culture. You will be taken on walks that encourage playful engagement with sound, texture, and colour, or those that explore the ways the Forest has shaped communities and local history. In addition, the Youth Landscapers Collective will join the festival as artists in residence, to mark their tenth anniversary. With a spirit of curiosity and creativity, they will appear at selected walks to collect the sights and sounds of the Forest in imaginative ways. Recordings and images collected will be used in a new public artwork later in the year.

Ballater Walking Festival

Just east of the Cairngorms lies the village of Ballater. Here, local ramblers are hosting their annual walking festival of tough, moderate and easy walks inviting you to explore the area. There will also be a programme of evening entertainment including talks, dinners and a ceilidh.

Lincolnshire Wolds
The Lincolnshire Wolds Outdoor Festival takes place in and around the Lincolnshire Wolds, an Area of Outstanding Beauty . This nationally important and cherished landscape has much to offer with plentiful outdoor activities on offer – from fishing to gliding by way of biking and, of course, hillwalking.

Lake District
Keswick Mountain Festival (KMF) is one of the UK’s best-loved and most popular events for fans of the outdoors. Founded in 2007, it brings thousands of visitors to Keswick for a weekend of immersive experiences among the famous Cumbrian fells and lakes. As always, the Festival Village in Crow Park will be the main hub at KMF, but participants in many of the activities will have the opportunity to explore the surrounding landscape, while aspects of the event will also take place in the nearby town centre.

Guernsey Spring Walking Festival
23 May – 7 June
Guernsey
Join experienced leaders from the Bailiwick of Guernsey Guild of Accredited Guides for their annual Spring Walking Festival. Each day will offer the chance to explore Guernsey, Herm and Sark, from coastal hikes and hidden ruettes tranquilles. All are rated from an easy amble to a more testing hike.

The Big Butterfly Count is a nationwide citizen science survey aimed at helping us assess the health of our environment. It was launched in 2010 and has rapidly become the world’s biggest survey of butterflies. The Big Butterfly Count 2026 reopens on the 1st of July ready for the main event between the 17th of July and 9th of August. All the counts can be viewed on the interactive map.

The Arc’teryx Alpine Academy is back in Chamonix, where mountain culture meets community for a truly immersive alpine experience. Take part in the world’s largest outdoor education event with more clinics than ever before, learn from world-class athletes and level up your skills. Across all skill levels, the Alpine Academy offers a unique chance to learn from 150+ IFMGA guides and 50+ Arc’teryx athletes. Among others, climbing legends Ines Papert and Will Gadd, trail runner Martin Kern and Team GB climber, Hamish McArthur will be sharing the mountain experiences with attendees. Offering more than 1,000 spots in 80+ different clinics across alpinism, trail running, climbing, photography or environmental awareness, it’s the chance to lift skills to the next level. Together with Access Mont Blanc, clinics are also offered for people with disabilities.

Mendip Ramblers Free Walking Festival

The Mendip Ramblers’ annual Walking Festival will be based in Wells, Somerset. Famous for its Cathedral and Bishops Palace, it is the smallest free standing city in the UK. Lying at the heart of Somerset it is surrounded by beautiful and varied countryside. Each day, there will be three morning walks with daily afternoon family walks of approximately four miles. Walks include at least one stop for food and drink and all walkers are welcome.

Stonehouse Walking Festival

Did you know that the small town of Stonehouse in Gloucestershire sits alongside the restored Stroudwater Canal, the Cotswold Way and the River Frome? Or that it has a thatched cottage, a waterfall, a vineyard, and a working paper bag factory (since 1922)? There are amazing views walking in all directions, either straight up and around Doverow hill, along the canal, or across fields and woodland to other small villages. Stonehouse is mostly flat and is very accessible for all including users of mobility vehicles. There is a good variety of shops and refreshments available in town.
