The Highland Bookshop, Fort William, to launch Scotland’s biggest selection of specialist outdoor books
The Highland Bookshop opened last summer on Fort William High Street, and is now expanding upstairs with the new Big Outdoors Book Lounge, which will hold Scotland’s biggest selection of specialist outdoor books – climbing, walking, water activities and adventure travel – right in the heart of the Adventure Capital of the UK. There will also be comfy seats and mountain art.
The Highland Bookshop is the brainchild of Lochaber entrepreneur Angus MacDonald, and Kevin Ramage, owner of the award-winning Watermill Bookshop in Aberfeldy – which is itself a stop-off for many on walking trips in the Southern Highlands.
The Big Outdoors Lounge will feature extensive selections of climbing, walking and river guides, including from overseas publishers. It will also stock copies of magazines such as Alpinist and The Journal.
The opening of The Big Outdoors Book Lounge will coincide with the Fort William Mountain Festival, with the launch at 5pm on Thursday 22 February of photographer Dougie Cunningham’s new book Photographing Scotland and an exhibition of Dougie’s work. Also during the Mountain Festival, at 3pm on Saturday 24 February renowned outdoors film producer Richard Else will be talking at the bookshop about his new book Wainwright Revealed.
Subsequent events planned for spring 2018 include former editor of The Great Outdoors Cameron McNeish talking about his new autobiography, and Sandy Allan recounting his Piolet D’Or-winning traverse of Nanga Parbat.
