The Scottish Avalanche Information Service will wind down daily reports this weekend – but avalanche conditions could persist for weeks yet
Every season, from roughly December to April, SAIS provide an invaluable service by issuing detailed daily reports from six mountain areas: Lochaber, Glen Coe, Creag Meagaidh, Northern Cairngorms, Southern Cairngorms, and Torridon. These reports are useful for anyone heading onto the hill. SAIS also record avalanches; so far this season, 218 avalanches have been recorded.
On Sunday 15 April, the SAIS will no longer issue detailed daily updates for this season, and will instead post general advice on avalanche risk until all risk is deemed past.
Even after daily forecasts have ceased for this year, it’s worth bearing in mind that avalanches could still occur – even if the calendar says it’s spring or early summer! Be alert to the risk and don’t be complacent. Many Scottish mountains currently retain more snow than they did this time last year, and the risk of wet-snow slides increases as thaw conditions become prevalent.
