The Tierra Lite Track Pants are a highly versatile hiking trousers are made from a lighter weight of softshell than the Montane and Fjällräven trousers tested, making them less suitable for deep winter but a lot more useful for the warmer months. While I’d still find them a bit warm for a hot midsummer day, I’d be happy using them on cooler mountain days from March to October. The fit is roomy but not baggy, so you could easily layer long johns underneath.

The thin, stretchy softshell is very breathable and has a soft backer. One feature I particularly like is the panels of fully waterproof/breathable material on the ankles and the seat: yes, you can sit down on a wet bench and not get a wet bottom! It’s a small but welcome detail. Big side vents make it easy to cool down if you do overheat.

The hems are, in my view, a bit overbuilt, with large buckle-adjustable straps and boot-lace hooks on bungee cord. This makes them more difficult to attach securely to laces. However, it isn’t a big issue – and the ankle zips do mean they’ll fit over big boots.

The pocket selection is good, although I’d like to see two thigh pockets instead of one. Support is offered via belt loops. Overall, these are excellent three-season softshell trousers suited to a wide range of conditions.
