Chris Townsend examines the some of hillwalking’s most useful garments. On test Rab Strata Vest

Most of the vests tested are designed for warmth first and foremost and are great for use when stationary. The Rab Strata Vest is different. It’s designed for warmth and breathability whilst active. Polartec Alpha is claimed to be the most breathable synthetic insulation and I certainly find it very good. To enhance this Rab has lined the Strata Vest with a mesh inner so moisture vapour can quickly pass through. The Strata also has a baffle behind the zip, a fleece-lined collar and half-fleece lined pockets. The chest pocket is large enough to take a map, useful when wearing the vest all day. The Large size fits over a thin insulated jacket. Of all the vests tested this is the one I’d choose to wear whilst walking rather than for rest stops and in camp.
