Although described as a mixed trail running or approach shoe, these light Mammut shoes are still grounded in its mountain heritage. Along with the Hanwag Drifter, these are the trail shoes that would most appeal to walkers used to a pair of boots. It’s impressive how light they’ve managed to make them, given the features. There’s no waterproof membrane, but the reinforced mesh uppers are quite thick, and have Kevlar reinforcement around the base of the shoe. As a result, the React is warmer than most without a membrane, but are still better ventilated than those that do. The lacing is asymmetrical and there’s a unique toggle that allows you to pull them tight with one hand, or in the regular way. The outsole is excellent, with deep lug patterns. These are made with the mountains in mind, and would be my choice on rocky terrain.
