Techno-gimmicks in a base layer! LS (long sleeve) Quest Crew has ‘run-specific features’ including a small zipped pocket across the back, at right hip level, with an eyelet leading to the inside of the garment for an MP3 cable. I think you’re supposed to run the cable against your skin, to ear level. Or not, as in my case. This would be great for runners, but for walkers carrying a rucksack, the pocket is inaccessible and the zip a potential rubbing point. Apart from that, the wool is midweight (200 g/sq.m) with pointelle panels under the arms to aid venting and speed up drying time. This does happen, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t make a noticeable difference: the wool still retains moisture and feels clammy when wet. I overheated less in this than the equivalent-weight Trekmates. The cut is close without being tight and while the sleeves have thumb loops they’re not long enough to get in the way. Body length is trouser-friendly. Heaviest in the test but good for cool weather use and for wool fans.
