These may not be the lightest crampon, but they are versatile, indestructible all-rounders

A plastic cradle system is smooth and simple to use, with narrow, soft yet tough webbing straps threading through flat-faced O-rings. The cradle and rear platform are open at the back (there is no post in the way) so the boot can locate where its shape and size allows.

The 10 claws are conventionally placed: two angled forward, four under the front and four at the rear; the pair nearest the instep have notches for aggressive grip. They feel dextrous and light on snow, especially on steeper, icy going. Adjustment for length is faultless – these were the only crampon to fit a size 37 and size 44 with equal ease – on a spring-loaded linking bar.

Grivel’s anti-ball plates (‘Anti-bott’) are brilliant: moulded plastic with a downward-facing bubble that acts like a spring to push snow out. If you are looking for tough, durable, comfortable crampons for regular winter use, these are a top choice.

Invest in a crampon bag to keep slush and spikes off the rest of your gear, and you’re set for the white stuff.
