Our Gear Editor Chris Townsend has been hiking the GR5, a long-distance trail through the Alps. In his latest post, he describes the varied weather – a first frost of the walk, some wind and rain – and food shortages thanks to many businesses being closed at the end of the season.

By first light the rain had stopped. The air was misty and damp. As the clouds rose I could see fresh snow high above and was glad I’d camped in the valley. I was down in the woods again the next night after a day of bitter winds and spits of snow and hail.
