The Salewa Ortles Tirolwool Responsive Stretch boasts a good hood, long length and generous pockets, says Kirsty Pallas.

The snappily named Ortles Tirolwool Responsive Stretch insulated jacket is an interesting offering from Salewa. They’ve been using sheep wool for a few years now, which has the advantages of being a natural material that stays warm when wet, unlike down, but does weigh more. The fill of this insulated jacket is a mix of wool and synthetic fibres which gives good warmth across the jacket. The shell fabric has a 4 way stretch which would come in useful for climbing, as well as the articulated arms.

  • Weight: 338g
  • Pros: Good pocket placement, large chest pocket, droptail at back
  • Cons: Roomy fit, quite bulky profile

Fill: 60gsm Tirol Wool Responsive Stretch | Shell: 4 way stretch nylon with PFC free DWR treatment | Hood: elasticated and adjustable drawcord | Cuffs: elasticated | Hem: dual drawcord | Pockets: 2 handwarmer, 1 internal chest, all zipped | Sizes: UK 4-14 | Men’s version: Yes

However, the fit feels very bulky, and I would size down next time. It both feels roomy inside the jacket, even with several layers on, and has a larger profile for underneath a waterproof, most noticeably on the front and the arms.

I like the length of the Ortles Tirolwool Responsive Stretch. This is the longest jacket in the test and has a droptail that comfortably covers my hips. The pockets are roomy and nicely positioned for a hip belt or harness, with a very generous chest pocket. The cuffs are elasticated but not as neat as I would like, due to the overall bulk.

A top feature is the hood. It’s fully insulated but tailored, and fits snugly especially when the zip is fully done up. It’s also got a drawcord to cinch it in around the ears to fine tune the fit.

The Ortles Tirolwool Responsive Stretch jacket is feature packed, but it’s let down by being not quite true to size. I do like the use of wool and more natural materials, especially when so much kit is made of plastics, and the added length is excellent.
