Chris Townsend gives his verdict on the Berghaus Hydroshell Hybrid

This jacket combines two different types of Berghaus’s own Hydroshell fabric in order to make a durable but lightweight garment.

The tougher 3-layer fabric makes up the hood, shoulders and top half of the arms.

The lighter 2.5-layer version makes up most of the body and the lower half of the arms. This results in a waterproof jacket that is quite light and that feels substantial. Breathability is good.

The jacket has one big flaw. The huge helmet-compatible hood doesn’t have a volume adjuster. Using the front drawcords it can be tightened enough that I can see out, though it’s like looking down a tunnel and doesn’t move with my head.

When the hood is really tightened, the long drawcords can hit you in the face if it’s windy. The pockets are reasonably roomy, though none will take a map.

The mid ones can be used when wearing a hipbelt though the bottom of them is cut off. They’re made of mesh and so can be used as vents. The fairly short side zips are very easy to use as they don’t curve under the armpits.
