Waterproof jackets don’t need to break the bank. Gear editor Chris Townsend assess the best budget waterproofs. On test Regatta Topout waterproof jacket

Made from a soft comfortable stretch fabric that makes it feel more like a softshell than a waterproof the Regatta Topout is a pleasant jacket to wear. It’s also more breathable than most garments in this price range. The hood with its big stiffened peak is excellent, being easily adjusted, moving with the head and providing good protection. All the pockets are roomy and will hold maps but they are also all cut off by a hipbelt. Unusually in a lined waterproof the Topout has underarm zips. The cuffs are quite wide too and the jacket has better ventilation options than most of those tested. The weight is slightly higher than alternatives but then so is the comfort. This is a jacket you can wear all day and not feel like you’re in a plastic bag.
