This is a functional jacket that performs fi ne. However it is a bit more expensive and a bit heavier than similar garments, especially the Montane Lite-Speed. The slick fabric feels tough and is comfortable. It has a striped pattern that may appeal to some but also put off others (I wouldn’t choose it). Merrell describes the Phoenix as a “race-y running jacket to look and be fast”, which I guess refers in part to the stripes. The hood gives good protection, though there’s no peak, and it can be tightened down so it doesn’t blow off in the wind. It moves with the head too. The pockets are roomy but covered by a hipbelt. The elastic cuff s are quite slack, allowing a little airfl ow, and the sleeves can easily be pulled up. A large size was provided for test and this is roomy enough to be worn over a thick fleece. There’s nothing much wrong with this jacket then. It’s just that there are better designed ones that weigh and cost less.
