H&M aren’t usually thought of for outdoor clothing, but they do make some suitable garments like this waterproof jacket. It’s made from a substantial three-layer fabric that is good for severe winter weather. The fabric isn’t as breathable as more expensive jackets but that’s not a surprise at this price.

The design is good, just let down a little by the hood, which has a soft peak that doesn’t offer much protection. It also only has a rear adjuster on the outside but here H&M has done a better job than some outdoor brands as it’s easy to cinch the hood round the face just using this even though the hood is big. There are front drawcords, but these are inside the jacket, so you have to open the zip at the neck to adjust them, not something I like doing in a blizzard or heavy rain. H&M don’t call the hood helmet-compatible, but one would easily fit under it.
How Chris Tested the H&M StormMove
Chris tested this jacket on day walks and multi day trips in the Cairngorms in the autumn and winter of 2023/24. Conditions included heavy rain, soaking drizzle, blizzards, and ferocious winds. Weights were measured on Chris’s home digital scales.
The jacket has underarm zips that come further down the side than most and are only a little awkward to use. The cuffs are wide for ventilation too and easily fit over gloves.
The lower handwarmer pockets are cut off by a hipbelt but there is a roomy chest pocket that’s easily big enough for a map.
The StormMove is quite heavy, but it does provide good winter protection at a low price.
