James Roddie gives his assessment of this two-person backpacking tent from Scotland-based outdoor brand, Vango

There is a lot to like about the Vango Tryfan 200, and its design includes some features not seen very often in two person tents. Four poles are used, making this a particularly sturdy design. It does well in strong winds as a result, although I felt it was quite noisy during a windy night.

A standout feature is the large vent doors on each end. These allow you to fully open a large section of the flysheet and inner for full airflow throughout the tent if required. The inner vent door can be either left open, or closed as either solid mesh or mosquito net, allowing a variety of ventilation options. These vent doors are large enough to act as an access point for a child or dog.

Another standout feature is the versatile flysheet doors. One features a traditional central zip, whilst the other has a full-length zip and a pair of exterior toggles. This allows you to open and secure the doors in a variety of ways, depending on the conditions

Pitching is not the fastest but it was very straightforward. The tent pitches inner-first, and with such thick material being used things are not going to dry fast if you have to pitch it in heavy rain. However, the materials are highly robust and waterproof.

Vango Tryfan 200 review

Space inside is luxurious. There is 115cm of headroom at the apex, and this doesn’t drop off much towards the ends. The inner is a generous 230cm, and the steep walls allow ample space throughout.

Large porches and several internal stash pockets give substantial storage space. There are a few gear loops in the inner, but I wish these were larger and less fiddly.

The Tryfan has a lot going for it, but it is heavy at 3.87kg. Split between two backpacking packs it is manageable, but it feels excessive for one person to carry. Otherwise, it’s an affordable, versatile and sturdy shelter that performs well in a variety of conditions.
