Waterproof jackets don’t need to break the bank. Gear editor Chris Townsend assess the best budget waterproofs. On test The North Face Quest waterproof jacket

Lightweight and comfortable the Quest is an ok jacket but it does cost a little more than similar ones. The fabric is soft and flexible. The hood gives reasonable protection but only has one adjuster and that’s on the back. Tightening this does pull in the hood close round the face but also flattens the peak on the forehead, rendering it useless. It’s also harder to adjust the fit slightly with only one adjustment. I’d much prefer a volume adjustment at the rear and two front drawcords. The pockets are roomy but cut off by a hipbelt. Ventilation is by the front zip only as there are no underarm zips or venting pockets and the cuffs are elasticated. The flap under the front zip could be stiffer as I found it had a tendency to fold into the jacket, leaving the zip unprotected.
