Garmin fēnix 7 Pro Sapphire Solar

Alex Roddie recommends

If you want mapping on your wrist this is an excellent choice.
Pros
  • battery life
  • high level of customisation
Cons
  • steep learning curve
Quick stats
Prime Deal Price: $499.99 (RRP: $899.99) – save 48% at Amazon

The Garmin fenix 6 Pro Solar is the most full-featured watch tested in our guide to the best GPS watches for hiking, with superb build quality, comprehensive tools for mountain navigation, and colour mapping. The watch itself is fairly compact but chunky, and incredibly durable. Although it has a solar panel, this will only slow battery drain slightly, even in full sun. However, battery life is superb; I routinely got over 35 hours with GPS and heart rate. You can switch off features for even better battery life. If you want mapping on your wrist this is an excellent choice.

Garmin Instinct 2X Solar Tactical Edition

Alex Roddie recommends

It does all the basics well, including offline sync with your phone and OS grid reference at the push of a button.
Pros
  • available in two sizes
  • exceptional battery life
  • rugged
Cons
  • many features not relevant to hikers
Quick stats

The Garmin Instinct 2 Solar is a rugged-looking watch with a silicone strap, a clear monochrome display that’s highly readable in all conditions, and solar charging. The interface is similar to other Garmins’. The circular cutout can show useful info such as elevation. Screens can be customised in-watch; this can take a while to set up, and can feel intimidating, but once configured is very powerful. Navigation features are comprehensive. It does all the basics well, including offline sync with your phone and OS grid reference at the push of a button.

Flextail Zero Pump

David Lintern Highly Recommends

The flextail Zero is tiny, weighs very little and saves a good deal of effort, especially with higher volume mats.
Pros
  • Size
  • Weight
  • Performance
Cons
  • None
Quick stats
Prime Deal Price: $43.99 (RRP: $59.99) – save 27% at Amazon

Where outdoor ‘gadgets’ are concerned, I favour simplicity and lean towards scepticism, but the Flextail Zero Pump has me second guessing my Luddism. Previous air pumps I’ve tried have been heavy, bulky, energy inefficient or just not that effective. The Zero is small, lightweight, powered by a rechargeable, removable (and replaceable) USB-c battery… and best of all, it works!

Ledlenser HF8R CORE Headlamp

Chris Townsend recommends

A chunkier version of the HF6R, I’d like to see this otherwise excellent lamp shed some weight
Pros
  • Auto dimming & focusing
  • Control wheel
  • Battery life
  • Waterproof
Cons
  • Heavy
  • Proprietary charging system
  • Expensive
Quick stats
Prime Deal Price: $89.97 (RRP: $149.95) – save 40% at Amazon

The Ledlenser HF8R Core is a chunky, heavy headlamp made from aluminium. It’s essentially a bigger more powerful version of the HF6R with one added feature called Adaptive Light Beam Technology. This means the light changes in brightness and focusing depending on where you’re looking, making it a hands free headlamp. It works well and I can’t really see any need to change to the separate light levels. These are more powerful than the ones on the HF6R but work in the same way and have the same control wheel for changing from spot to flood. The control wheel has no effective in Adaptive Light mode.

Nitecore HC65 UHE Headlamp

Chris Townsend recommends

This lamp offers more power than most users are likely to need – but there are benefits
Pros
  • Powerful
  • Battery life
  • Waterproof
Cons
  • Quite heavy
  • Small button
Quick stats
Prime Deal Price: $71.96 (RRP: $89.95) – save 20% at Amazon

If you want the brightest light and longest reach, the Nitecore HC65 UHE is the headlamp to choose. In the Turbo mode it has 2000 lumens and throws a beam 222 metres. Unsurprisingly the battery then only lasts 2 hours. In the primary modes the beam is a mix of flood and spot that works well. I didn’t miss having them separately. The HC65 UHE is one of the heavier headlamps tested and all the weight is at the front. A top strap for the headband is supplied and I fitted this after using the headlamp without it so that I didn’t have to have the headband uncomfortably tight to stop the lamp slipping down. With the top strap it feels secure and comfortable.

Sierra Designs Meteor Lite Tent

Chris Townsend recommends

This is one of the roomiest two-season tents and the cost is quite low so it’s an excellent choice.
Pros
  • roomy porch
  • good headroom
Cons
  • inner-first pitching
Quick stats
Prime Deal Price: $249.97 (RRP: $499.95) – save 45% at Amazon

The weight of the Meteor 3000 2P is fine for two people, especially given the space and the two doors. It can be pitched quickly with the dome being formed by a single hub pole with four arms then the ridge pole running over the top of it. The inner clips onto the poles. It can be pitched flysheet-first and then the inner clipped in place from inside if it’s raining – though this is a little awkward.

KEEN Women’s Zionic Hiking Shoes

Chris Townsend recommends

Overall the Zionics are good lightweight boots that perform well, even if you’re not going fast.
Pros
  • lightweight
  • eco-concious
Cons
  • difficult to get on
Quick stats
Prime Deal Price: $79.94 (RRP: $144.95) – save 45% at Amazon

Keen’s latest boot, the Zionic, is designed for moving fast and has a ‘more contoured, athletic fit’, which means it’s slimmer and lower volume than other Keen footwear. It’s also lighter weight, which I think is the key advantage for hillwalkers and backpackers whatever speed you go at. The fit is just wide enough for me though I couldn’t wear thick socks in the boots without removing the insoles.

Osprey Talon 22L Hiking Backpack

Chris Townsend recommends

If the features work for you the Osprey Talon 22 is an excellent option.
Pros
  • easy access
Cons
  • heavy
Quick stats
Prime Deal Price: $135.95 (RRP: $159.95) – save 15% at Amazon

It’s comfortable to carry with well-padded shoulder straps, back and hipbelt. The mesh-covered back on the Osprey Talon 22 allows more air flow than some designs for keeping your back dry. The back is adjustable. The main compartment has good access via a long zip. The side and hipbelt pockets are roomy. There’s no front pocket, though, and I did miss this. There’s also a big, padded laptop sleeve next to the back. I guess if you want a pack for the hills and the city this might be useful. I’d rather have a front pocket. The laptop padding adds weight too. This pack is quite heavy for one this size. The pack carries fine. If the features work for you the Osprey Talon Earth 22 is an excellent option.
