Garmin fēnix 7X PRO SOLAR GPS 51mm

Alex Roddie recommends

If you want mapping on your wrist this is an excellent choice.
Pros
  • battery life
  • high level of customisation
Cons
  • steep learning curve
Quick stats
Prime Deal Price: £533.99 (RRP: £739.99) – save 28% at Amazon

The Garmin fenix Pro Solar is the most full-featured watch tested in our guide to the best GPS watches for hiking, with superb build quality, comprehensive tools for mountain navigation, and colour mapping. The watch itself is fairly compact but chunky, and incredibly durable. Although it has a solar panel, this will only slow battery drain slightly, even in full sun. However, battery life is superb; I routinely got over 35 hours with GPS and heart rate. You can switch off features for even better battery life. If you want mapping on your wrist this is an excellent choice.

Garmin Instinct 2X SOLAR GPS 50mm

Amazon Prime Day Deals Garmin

Alex Roddie recommends

With a leap in battery life, improved altimeter accuracy and extra software features this has become more complicated to set up, but has new features aimed at multi-sport athletes.
Pros
  • solar charging
  • durable
  • multiple activity modes
Cons
  • heavy
Quick stats
Prime Deal Price: £296.99 (RRP: £350.00) – save 15% at Amazon

The Garmin Instinct 2 Solar is a rugged-looking watch with a silicone strap, a clear monochrome display that’s highly readable in all conditions, and solar charging. The interface is similar to other Garmins’. The circular cutout can show useful info such as elevation. Screens can be customised in-watch; this can take a while to set up, and can feel intimidating, but once configured is very powerful. Navigation features are comprehensive. It does all the basics well, including offline sync with your phone and OS grid reference at the push of a button.

Battery life on the Garmin Instinct 2 Solar is substantially better than its predecessor’s, which was already excellent. The more efficient solar panel can now extend usable tracking time dramatically. Switch off the heart-rate sensor and you can easily get 100 hours of GPS-on time even with only a little sunlight every day. The Instinct 2 Solar is a great GPS watch for hill use. If you’re also a mountain athlete then this watch will give you a lot more data to play with.

Flextail Zero Pump

David Lintern Highly Recommends

The flextail Zero is tiny, weighs very little and saves a good deal of effort, especially with higher volume mats.
Pros
  • Size
  • Weight
  • Performance
Cons
  • None
Quick stats
Prime Deal Price: £36.33 (RRP: £44.99) – save 19% at Amazon

Where outdoor ‘gadgets’ are concerned, I favour simplicity and lean towards scepticism, but the Flextail Zero Pump has me second guessing my Luddism. Previous air pumps I’ve tried have been heavy, bulky, energy inefficient or just not that effective. The Zero is small, lightweight, powered by a rechargeable, removable (and replaceable) USB-c battery… and best of all, it works!

Vango Hydra 200 Lightweight 2P Tent

  • sturdy geodesic design
  • two pitching options
Cons
  • quite heavy
Quick stats

The Hydra is a great starter tent for gentle camping conditions. The semi-geodesic shape gives a self-supporting structure with excellent balance between weight and stability. The Hydra 200 is ideal for wild camping and multi-day backpacking adventures thanks to a ProTex 70D 5000 mm hexagonal polyester flysheet – fabric exclusive to Vango. This has been weather tested to the European standard EN5912. Salewa Mountain Trainer Lite Gore-Tex

Lara Dunn Highly Recommends

If you’re looking for something to keep you comfortable and safe on alpine hikes, scrambles and via ferratas, they are well worth the investment and should last for years.
Pros
  • Supportive
  • Rugged
  • Highly Technical
Cons
  • Heavy
  • Expensive
Quick stats
Prime Deal Price: £104.76 (RRP: £145.00) – save 28% at Amazon

Aside from their weight, the first thing you notice about the Salewa MTN Trainer 2 GTX is the sheer level of support they offer. There’s little to know lateral torsion and the front/back flex is minimal too, making these far better suited to rock-hopping, scrambles and via ferratas than to a low-level ramble. The fit is anatomically shaped, created on a female-specific last and it contours neatly and securely around the foot thanks to lacing that goes right down to the toes and to the 3F cable-system heel cradle. The rugged Vibram outsole has an aggressive tread that gives excellent traction on a variety of terrain and surfaces and sheds mud well. There’s a section in the middle- the Ferrata Zone- that’s flat but textured to give better grip on the metal ladders of via ferratas.

Salewa Mountain Trainer Mid Gore-Tex

TGO Magazine verdict

A good hybrid, designed not just for hillwalking but also for easy scrambling and mountaineering
Pros
  • climbing lacing
  • climbing zone on sole
Cons
  • steel cable attachment broke on test sample
Quick stats
Prime Deal Price: £124.04 (RRP: £200) – save 38% at Amazon

The sole is Vibram WTC 2, with deep lugs that finish before the toe, giving a smooth area for climbing and edging on rock. The upper is suede with a fabric tongue and a padded ankle collar, with a drop at the back to give some flexibility to ankle movement. A multi-fit footbed comes with the boots, which allows you to add in different footbeds depending on your foot shape, and tailor the fit to you. There is a generous arch support built into the main footbed. The waterproofing is Gore-Tex Performance Comfort lining, which is nicely breathable. There is a rubber rand that runs right around the boot, giving full protection against rocks on the suede upper. This is a comfortable multi-use boot.

NEBO Rambler 20K Power Bank

Steph Wetherell’s Best Value Buy

It doesn’t have all the features of a high end power bank, but is perfect for keeping your devices charged for days
Pros
  • large capacity
Cons
  • limited output ports
Quick stats
Prime Deal Price: £35.99 (£59.99) – save 40% at Amazon

The Nebo 20K is an affordable, high capacity power bank that is ideal for a multi-day walking or camping trip. It took a long time to charge up via the USB-C port – not surprising given its 20,000 mAh capacity – but when at capacity, it fully charged my phone around 5 times. It has a digital display giving you an accurate percentage of its charge, which is useful both when charging it up, and also knowing exactly how much power is left, which is really useful if you’re trying to ration your power usage on a long trip.

SEALSKINZ Harling Unisex All Weather Gloves

James Roddie’s verdict

Overall the Sealskinz Harling is a well-made, durable glove. It is highly windproof.
Pros
  • Rugged construction
  • Wind resistant
Cons
  • Tight fit
  • waterproofing could be better
Quick stats
Prime Deal Price: £35.14 (RRP: £50.00) – save 30% at Amazon

The Sealskinz Harling hiking glove has a reassuringly rugged feel to it, with a quite rigid structure and tough materials throughout. The suede palm is similar to those found on some gardening gloves, and during my testing this stood up well to scrambling on rough rock types. There is limited stretch given by the materials, apart from in the semi-elasticated cuff. A nose-wipe is included on the thumb of both gloves, and this is soft and effective.
