Contributor Guidelines

We are always interested in hearing from writers and photographers who would like to contribute material for The Great Outdoors magazine. Please contact the editor via email if you are interested in submitting a feature article, Wild Walk or photography. We are not looking for anyone to review gear at present.

Feature articles

The Great Outdoors magazine’s feature articles focus on adventurous walks in the hills and mountains of the UK and overseas. These are generally bought as words-and-pictures packages and so need to come with high-quality photography.

If you have already completed the trip that you are interested in writing about, or if you’re pitching an article on an area you’re very familiar with, please email the editor with half a dozen low-resolution samples of photographs, a very brief synopsis of your proposed article and examples of previously published work. If you haven’t had work published elsewhere, please send a draft introductory paragraph.

If you are hoping to write about a trip you haven’t yet undertaken, please send sample writing and photography from a previous trip.

During busy periods it can take a long time for us to respond to pitches so please bear with us but feel free to drop us an email if you’re worried that your pitch has got mislaid

Wild Walks

These are short (approx 500-word) accounts of single-day walks in the British countryside, published with a map and all the essential information a reader would need to complete the trip themselves. It is absolutely crucial that you are confident in your mapping and route directions so that others can comfortably follow in your footsteps using your description alongside their own map and compass. If you are interested in submitting a Wild Walk, we will need:

  • 500 words of first person, past tense narrative
  • A map with the route marked on it (these can easily be drawn up using a range of digital mapping software)
  • Numbered route directions matched with numbers on the map
  • Around 12 high quality photographs
  • The following information: distance walked in km, ascent made in m, time taken in hours, relevant OS and Harveys maps, any public transport options, the phone number of the local Tourist Information Centre

Photography

Photographers who are keen to submit work to The Great Outdoors should contact the editor on the email address above, with details of their website, Flickr account or similar, or with a small sample of images. Our front cover guidelines are available on request.
